IL Conversations ~ with Theresa Schiessl
The body is constantly spiraling, reaching, responding. Beneath every stretch, twist, and step is an intricate network of connections weaving through us ~ lines of tension and release that shape the way we move through the world.
So when Theresa Schiessl (@theresaseashell) talks about movement, she rarely talks about muscles in isolation. Instead, she speaks about lines. Connections. Relationships.
As co-owner and yoga teacher at The Path Wellness Center in Bali, Theresa’s work in Myofascial Integrated Alignment invites a softer, more intuitive relationship with movement ~ one that honours the body's natural intelligence rather than forcing it into prescribed forms. "We see the body as a whole," Theresa explains. "Rather than isolating a movement, we understand that every action has an effect throughout the entire body ~ from the head all the way down to the toes."
At the heart of her teaching is the understanding of the body's myofascial lines ~ continuous pathways of connective tissue that link muscles, joints, and movement patterns together. Through carefully sequenced movement, practitioners create and release tension along these lines, encouraging greater mobility, balance, and awareness.
One area Theresa loves to explore is the relationship between the lateral lines and the spiral lines. These fascial pathways work beautifully together because they share many of the same muscle groups and movement patterns.
The lateral line travels through the side body, connecting structures from the skull, through the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle of the neck, into the intercostals, obliques, and glutes. The spiral line, meanwhile, wraps around the body in a dynamic double-helix pattern, weaving from the upper body down through the legs and feet.
Working with these lines invites a deeper experience of movement ~ one that feels less about achieving a particular shape and more about listening to the body's innate intelligence.
Rather than chasing an external form, Theresa encourages students to tune into what feels right in each moment. The practice becomes an exploration of sensation, connection, and flow, allowing the body to move as an integrated whole.
It's a gentle reminder that alignment isn't something imposed from the outside. It's something we uncover by paying attention.
