IL Conversations ~ with Theresa Schiessl

The body is constantly spiraling, reaching, responding. Beneath every stretch, twist, and step is an intricate network of connections weaving through us ~ lines of tension and release that shape the way we move through the world.

So when Theresa Schiessl (@theresaseashell) talks about movement, she rarely talks about muscles in isolation. Instead, she speaks about lines. Connections. Relationships.

As co-owner and yoga teacher at The Path Wellness Center in Bali, Theresa’s work in Myofascial Integrated Alignment invites a softer, more intuitive relationship with movement ~ one that honours the body's natural intelligence rather than forcing it into prescribed forms. "We see the body as a whole," Theresa explains. "Rather than isolating a movement, we understand that every action has an effect throughout the entire body ~ from the head all the way down to the toes."

At the heart of her teaching is the understanding of the body's myofascial lines ~ continuous pathways of connective tissue that link muscles, joints, and movement patterns together. Through carefully sequenced movement, practitioners create and release tension along these lines, encouraging greater mobility, balance, and awareness.

One area Theresa loves to explore is the deep front line, weaving in elements of the superficial front and back lines~ lines that work in beautiful conversation with the deep front line and are brought in intentionally to support and deepen the work.

The deep front line travels through the innermost core of the body, connecting structures from the inner arch of the foot, up through the adductors and psoas, through the diaphragm and thoracic spine, and all the way to the base of the skull~ and fascinatingly, some anatomists trace it even further, up through the throat to end at the tongue itself.

Working with these lines invites a deeper experience of movement~ one guided by breath and felt from the inside out, less about achieving a particular shape and more about listening to what lives in the body's deepest layers.

Rather than chasing an external form, Theresa encourages students to tune into what feels right in each moment. The practice becomes an exploration of sensation, connection, and flow, allowing the body to move as an integrated whole.

It's a gentle reminder that alignment isn't something imposed from the outside. It's something we uncover by paying attention.
