Building Somatic Awareness

The word Soma means body - Somatic awareness is the attention and attunement we have with our bodily cues, feelings and sensations. Knowing how we feel, what our body needs, and what we are experiencing are key components of somatic or body awareness. But when we’ve learned to be disconnected from our body for a long time, this can be challenging at first.

Building somatic awareness begins first with getting in touch with our basic biological cues and simply noticing that we have a body here in this present moment.

This is the foundation to the practice of listening to our body

Intellectualizing vs Feeling Your Feelings

The power of using the word “and” when we find our mind taking over supports us in allowing our feelings to exist even amidst the thoughts.

For many of us, getting stuck in our head is a vicious cycle that leaves us feeling disconnected from our body and unable to self regulate our nervous system.

And while it can be tempting to just try to figure out what we’re feeling cognitively and analyze our responses to get those AH-HA moments, it still leaves us intellectualizing our experience and not actually feeling it.

Instead of trying to force ourselves one way or the other, I like to offer the option of using “and”

My thoughts are saying this AND my body is saying this.

When we can create space for both to exist, it helps us soften around the experience of feeling overtime

The Voo offers gentle stimulation for this nerve that invites subtle movement and vibrations often influencing a parasympathetic response in our body. You can do this exercise 1-2x a day or whenever you’re in need of support. You should feel the vibrations deep in your belly and you may notice a sigh, yawn or spontaneous deep breath after
