IL MUSES: CONVERSATION WITH MAYA POON

Maya Poon moves through life noticing what many of us miss. An artist who lets creativity flow through her rather than chasing it. She drinks cacao with the morning sun, travels to sit with indigenous communities, and finds rivers clean enough to drink from. We talked about time, art, and letting our bodies remember their connection to water.
Her words below ↓

What does a typical day in your life look like?

Every day tends to be different. I enjoy allowing time, seasons and emotions to be, to let them have space to express themselves. My morning routine is to rise and go outside, to make a warm cacao and have a moment of connection with the sun. That is very important to me. Then I like to activate my body through pilates and yoga and end with a very delicious skincare routine of serum, oils and gua sha.

What inspires you to move around the world and immerse yourself in the lives of native communities?

I love moving around the world, exploring this beautiful planet that has been growing, seeding, and nourishing us so deeply. I enjoy traveling and spending time with indigenous communities the most, as for me they represent living life in authenticity, in the truest form that life is meant to be experienced. Their art, life, work is always one unity – I appreciate this coherency of love. And they are always living close to the Earth, walking to our Mother’s rhythm.

Can you share a moment or story from your travels that profoundly shifted your perspective?

There is a very special place I love where the water from the river is so pure that you can drink out of it. The first time I met this river, my perspective on our earth shifted. I realized from all the waters the earth is composed of, there is so little we can drink from now. Similar to our body, we are composed of so much water, yet navigating our own emotions has become so challenging to the humans of today. How have we gone so far from our roots? How have we polluted so deeply this sacred element? We go from treating rivers as dumps to buying numerous devices to filter it as we need to consume it to survive, it simply doesn’t make sense. This realization made me very sad yet more appreciative than ever for the communities fighting every day to preserve the elements of earth.

What’s been your favourite destination so far, and what makes it special to you?

Oaxaca, in all her ways, is forever embedded in my heart. I would like to think we are a reflection / metaphor of each other – our rhythm, emotions, rivers run the same.

Favourite word of wisdom that you like / mantra:

Let your river flow to where it belongs.

Favourite piece of clothing from Indigo Luna or your most worn pieces :)

I love the Taylor Giavasis skirt in Carob! And the Paloma set ( Longsleeve - Skirt ), I have trouble ever taking it off once it’s on.

What does creating art mean to you, and how does it reflect your connection to the world around you?

Creating art for me is simply a channeling of the beyond. It might sound silly, but I don't really push or make an effort to be creative, I believe that creativity is simply a form of letting the spirit of the cosmos, the mystery speak through you. My art belongs to her. My heart guides my path. I am in no control.

Favourite song:

- Tezeta by Mulatu Astatke

Favourite book:

- Tantra by Osho

How do you build and nurture your connection to the Earth and Mother Nature? What does Mother Nature represent to you on a spiritual or emotional level?

Time is an important aspect. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to let time run. We are always trying to achieve something, or to push towards something. For me, it was very important to let time run and express herself, so i could see who i am and why i’m here. I don’t really believe in manifesting, but i believe in observation, gratitude and allowing the land, the unknown, the mystery to express herself in my life. My relationship with Nature is simple – she is my mother, she is the one holding ground for me every day, i am composed of her elements. Therefore, for me, i see no difference in us. I am Her and She is Me.

Thank you Maya, for showing us another way to see our connection to Earth, to art, to time.

Special thanks to photographers Andrea Finella and Tyler McGrath for beautifully capturing this journey.

With love,

Indigo Luna xx
